Pupil & Employer Engagement Programme

The aim of PEEP is to grow a successful and ambitious future workforce that better meets the needs of employers and offers a greater potential contribution to the local economy. The programme achieves this through a series of workplace visits and activities for eleven year olds as they arrive at secondary school.

According to a City & Guilds Survey of 2000 young people, Pupils that had contact at least four times with employers were five times more likely to be in employment, education or training.

Meanwhile, only 14% of pupils that received careers advice from a teacher rated this as very useful compared to 39% from an employer visit. The employer visit statistic increases to 88% for 16-18 year-olds. However, only 16% of 14-16 year-olds had visited an employer.

The ESB secured funding from Torridge District Council, to establish the first PEEP pilot, with three schools bringing together a cohort of 36 pupils who they felt would benefit most from the initiative.

With two programmes now running in Torridge and North Devon and a third cohort planned to start in September 2015, the PEEP initiative will form a case study for the Local Enterprise Partnerships’ Enterprise Education Task & Finish Group. This, alongside four other selected pilots, will form a best practice model for the LEP with the potential to expand these initiatives across Devon & Somerset.
